Evapotranspiration in young lime trees with automated irrigation

Citrus latifolia is increasingly being cultivated in Mediterranean areas, where the need for precise irrigation implies a sound knowledge of crop's water requirements, which carried out by monitoring tree status plant-soil-atmosphere system. Two year-old lime trees (Citrus Tan. cv. Bearss) were 45 L weighing pot-lysimeters filled with clay-loam soil and equipped sensors recording real-time status. Irrigation, drainage, pot weight, agro-meteorological variables also recorded real-time. Plant relations - stem (?stem) leaf (?leaf) potentials, gas exchange periodically measured throughout experiment. The automated protocol based on volumetric content was set to prevent stress (with mean seasonal values ?stem above -0.8 MPa 7 ?mol m?2 s?1 80 mmol s?1, net phtosynthesis stomatal conductance, respectively). From balance, computed fortnightly ET growing season varied from 0.25 2.56 plant?1 day?1 winter summer months, respectively. Maximum occurred July when evaporative demand highest fruits their most active phase. For day length, biomass changes negligible, weight variations served balance validation (r2=0.92***). contribution this work that it establishes scalable lysimeter prototype determining grown semi-arid conditions, using managed an automation protocol. This approach could be replicated measurements other crops.
